Inside the Atelier: Saddle-Stitching by Hand

Walk into our leather atelier on any given morning and you will hear very little — saddle-stitching is a quiet, exacting craft, each stitch pulled through by hand with two needles working from opposite directions.

The technique dates back centuries, and for good reason: unlike a machine-locked stitch, a saddle stitch will not unravel if a single thread is severed. Each stitch holds independently.

It takes roughly four times as long as machine stitching. We have never found a reason good enough to change that.

The result is a seam that ages the way the leather around it ages — evenly, and for decades.
