Building a Timeless Wardrobe

"Timeless" gets used loosely enough to mean almost nothing. In practice, it describes a narrow, specific set of choices: proportions that don't chase a trend cycle, cloth and leather selected for longevity rather than immediate impact, and a colour palette that recombines with itself rather than requiring constant new purchases to complete an outfit.

Start with proportion, not colour. A jacket cut with an extreme silhouette — exaggerated shoulder, cropped length, anything that reads as "of the moment" — dates the fastest, regardless of fabric quality. Buy outerwear and footwear at the top of your budget and separates at a more moderate one. A coat and a pair of shoes are worn in nearly every outfit for years; a shirt is replaced more often regardless of price. Weight your spending accordingly rather than evenly.
